Souper Bowl 2010

January 7, 2010

Whether or not your favorite team is playing in the NFL’s Super Bowl on February 7th, there is another kind of Souper Bowl that you might want to check out. Not only will you enjoy some delicious food, music and art, but you will be helping the UW Chapter of Habitat For Humanity raise funds for a new home for a needy local family.

2010 marks the 14th year the UW chapter has hosted the “Souper Bowl”. According to Garret Olson, the (student) director of the Souper Bowl, last year’s attendance hit 2,000 and raised over $30,000 for Dane County’s Habitat for Humanity. This year the 8th house funded by the UW chapter is being built. The ground was broken in September and the traditional house blessing prior to the family moving in is scheduled for May 2010. UW student volunteers are working every Saturday to make sure the house is completed on schedule. Other organizations such as UW Credit Union volunteer on Fridays and paid workers build during the week.

The goal this year is 2,500 attendees and to help reach that goal, the UW chapter has planned a fun-filled event that starts at 3 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. at the West High School auditorium. Individual bowls can be purchased for $15. There is also a family deal for $35 (2 bowls/4 meals). You are allowed to choose your bowl that you may then fill with a variety of soups, bread, and salad. All food is donated by local restaurants such as Panera.

The bowls are created by West High School students, other area high school students, and professionally from Bethel Horizon studio in Dodgeville.  Local bands such as Tangled Up in Blue will be performing and 105.5’s Triple M’s Pat Gallagher will be the emcee for this year’s event. In past years, local celebrities such as Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, Wisconsin’s First Lady, Jessica Doyle and UW athletes.

In addition to the food and festivities, a raffle will be held. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 6 for $5. An online silent auction where you can bid on professionally made bowls is currently underway. This year, the UW Camp Randall Classic is being held on the same day. If you attend the out-door hockey game, you may bring in your ticket stub and receive a $2 discount on admission to the Souper Bowl. But be forewarned—there is usually a line to get in at 3 p.m.
